Hello! Welcome to my website, and thanks for stopping by. My name is Emma, and I'm a Canadian, Victoria born and bred. I'm a biological oceanographer by training, but books have always been a passion of mine. Every week in the summer holidays as a kid I would collect a literal stack of 8-10 books from the library for my weekly consumption. My dad used to read to me every night until I was eight--then he started reading the Lord of the Rings to me too slowly, and I took over from there. From reading I fell into writing, mainly for my mum (my biggest fan!).
My first serious fiction endeavor was Mark of the Breenan. My commute was a long, tedious bus ride, and I would often close my eyes and elaborate on whatever stories I was currently immersed in, whether from reading or television or movies. My little interior worlds grew quite complex, and one day it dawned on me that I could make up my own stories in my head from scratch, since I was getting so good at building on other worlds. I retooled my favorite 'scenes' from my various imagined worlds, and Gwen and her friends came to life. I started bringing a notebook with me on the bus, and the majority of Mark of the Breenan was written there, jouncing and jostling down the road. When I sat down to write Ignition, Merlin practically scrambled to get out of my brain, so eager was he to make his voice heard. Now, seven books later, we're still going strong! The Nautilus Legends were born when I wanted to tie together my writing and science sides, and now I'm writing Merlin and Nautilus at the same time. There are lots of adventures in both series to keep me busy for a while. Keep in touch through my monthly newsletter!
